panaji: the police have urged that narkasur effigies be burned in open places and not on roads and permission from the local police authorities must be sought before the effigies are burnt along the roads. a press note released here, by the deputy inspector general (dig) of police (criminal investigation department (cid), mr p k shrivastava, states that the local police would take immediate action against those who burn the effigies on the roads without prior permission.
the press release further states that the organisers of the various narkasur programmes must apply for permission from the local police authorities before installing loud speakers at the venues. the police also would take strong action against those involved in malpractices during the diwali festival. the police would also take action against those found extorting money from passers by or residents in the area, rowdiness, drunken brawls and other forms of violent behaviour. the press note further states that when the effigies are being judged for the various competitions that are held, they should not be taken in a procession to a central place but be judged where they were originally located. our bicholim correspondent adds: the dy-collector of bicholim, mr yateendra maralkar, today held a meeting of organisers of narkasur competitions and appealed to them to obey the order of the supreme court strictly while celebrating the narkasur effigy burning festival. he also instructed them not to use crackers and fireworks near public places between 10 pm to 6 am as per the guidelines. the police officers and personnel are also asked to conduct strict patrolling to avoid any untoward incidents. our margao bureau adds: organisers of narkasur utsav in the city met today with police officials and held discussions with them over the celebrations. a delegation met sub-divisional police officer, mr shrish thorat and discussions were held. police stated that they would go by the rules framed and no violations will be allowed. police sources stated that no violence or bursting of crackers will be allowed beyond the prescribed time limit and police patrolling will be maintained in the city. a team of officials of the narkasur utsav samiti has met south goa sp and explained him their programme. according to police sources on the eve of narkasur utsav police will be posted at different points where the functions will be held and appealed to the organisers to conduct the function in a peaceful manner.
